20 Jan NIGERIA HAS WON EIGHT OUT OF TEN OF THE WOMEN’S AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS TOURNAMENT
In December 2016, the Super Falcons won their 10th African Women’s Cup of Nations title which they also took home in 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2014. Only Equatorial Guinea in 2008 and 2012 has managed to wrestle the African soccer crown away from the Nigerian women in the last 10 years.
Desire Oparanozie’s 84th-minute goal in Yaounde gave defending champion, Nigeria their 10th title in 12 tournaments. Oparanozie dribbled past defender Meffoumetou Falone before firing past goalkeeper Annette Ndom after the Indomitable Lionesses had failed to deal with Ngozi Okobi’s floated left-wing cross at the near post. It was the second time Nigeria had defeated a host nation in the final.
The Super Falcon’s coach, Florence Omagbemi became the second female coach to lead a team to victory in 10 editions of the African Women Nations Cup. The first to do so was her former teammate Uche Eucharia in 2010.
This Nigerian team is seen to be thriving despite the adversities and financial struggles it faces. Thankfully prize monies promised by the Government to the champions has now been paid. Here’s to a positive 2017!
